This is a response to the article by Ceri Radford titled “I spent a week becoming a witch and the results were worrying“. I am reviewing all witchcraft and Pagan related media on this blog now to help stop misconceptions and bias towards our community. We have been silent in the broom closet for too long.

First of all, the T-Rex was insulting: Our practice should be extinct like the dinosaur and is for children or people who are unintelligent is what she implies there when the T-Rex Lego figurine ends up on her “altar”. An altar is a sacred spiritual space, by the way, not a decoration for Instagram.

Ceri then goes on to say to start the process of becoming a witch, all logic and common sense as well as scientific understanding of the world must be gotten rid of. Basically, she’s calling us stupid, irrational people. She also accuses us of being in the same grouping as anti-vaccination and climate change deniers.

You cannot become a witch in one week. You cannot become a witch in one day. Becoming a witch takes years of study, practice and dedication. It is not a fad. Yes, women use witchcraft to become empowered. That is great! However witches are real and witches are not a joke. Witchcraft is not a joke. Spells are not a joke. Spells are real and spells work.

She couldn’t even get the term “spirit” right. She placed alcohol on the altar, not something representing spirit. Fire was the same vodka, not a flame or something representing it. Lack of effort, lack of intelligence and lack of respect.

Day 5 she attempts tarot without tarot cards! Jumps to a conclusion that we only see patterns that we want to see and that everything is fake (while using sea creature playing cards – probably not even numbered cards that she dug out of her daughter’s toy drawer). In the video I interpreted this for her. Symbolism and Google are fun!

The fact that Ceri Radford couldn’t complete a section or instruction of the book, yet the Independent UK still insists it’s kind of a book review, is silly. This is a disrespectful piece and I will not be silent about it. Neither should you!
